Doodad + Fandango - New at WORLD
Nikita Majajas (aka NIKITA MARGARITA) has been enamored with the world of wearable art and craft since arriving in Japan in the late nineties and finding herself smack bang in the middle of the street fashion explosion celebrated in the pages of publications such as Fruits Magazine. Inspired by the Harajuku kids wild and theatrical DIY street fashion, she returned to Sydney to study fashion design, shoe making and work in the Wardrobe department on TV commercials. After years of working in the TVC industry she completed an Advanced Diploma of Jewellery and Object Design, where she learnt silver smithing skills and spent her final year specialising in hand making metal tableware and handbags.
Since graduating from study she has participated in over 20 group exhibitions throughout Australia, showing her handcrafted metal wares, and held two solo shows: Coco Loco: An Ode to Kitsch an exhibition of one off hand crafted coconut handbags and Plastique Fantastique. In 2014 she was a participant in the Brand X Studios Residency program, aʼ Residency Program that provides Sydney-based artists with opportunities for free space to develop their creative practise, prepare for a production, form new creative relationships or retail directly to the public.ʼ During the residency Nikita developed her range of pop-art costume jewellery under the label name DOODAD + FANDANGO.
Inspired by contemporary artists such as Yayoi Kusama, Keith Haring and Haruki Murakami, her playful Perspex pieces, hand assembled in her Sydney studio makes bold and witty statements and straddle the divide between art and fashion. Nikita regularly exhibits hand made jewellery and objects as well as home wares and accessories and is continually on a mission to breathe the energy of performance and the passion of pop into the personality of objects.
